Does anyone remember the council built houses round about Cathcart Rd. or Crown st area. A girl I know stayed in Pollokshaws road facing the St Andrew print works and her building was being demolished so she qualified for one of them and she got one but they were rotten with dampness and they weren't up very long and were demolished. I'm not refering to the big flats at St Francis chapel these weren't very high maybe about 40+ years ago, or maybe it was less. Cannot ask the girl as she emigrated to Australia years ago.

The notorious Hutchie E blocks.
Great wide corridors for playin fitba and bogeys and then getting chased by the folk that stayed there!
The last family tae leave were the McNulty's.

Wow, that's some picture of the notorious Hutchie e blocks, I'm surmising it was taken from Stirlingfauld Place Heights. I lived at 221 Crown St and looking at that photo i can see my old bedroom window.
Re: new flats in Gorbals
To the admin that's a great photo but it wasn't them, these flats were built near Cathcart Rd/Hospital St or Thistle St. they didn't last very long as they were rotten with dampness.
I'm trying to remember when the girl I knew flitted to them they were brand new when she moved into them I am up in Castlemilk since1962/3 her mum was my neighbour downstairs from me maybe they were built around the 70's??
Hope someone can remember them but it would have to be one of our "golden oldies"

Re: new flats in Gorbals
We moved to Castlemilk in 72 and the hutchie e houses were the newest houses at the time that everybody moved into, although they were thought not to be big enough for us as there was 8 kids plus my parents. The Hutchie E flats were riddled with damp and were quickly nicknamed the DAMPIES. A couple of these blocks were in Crown St and at least one of them would have been built on what was Hospital/Thistle St. Few of our old neighbours were moved into these houses before we went to Castlemilk and to my knowledge, never knew of any other flats built at that time. They were demolished in the 80's.

I think you are right Josie this girl stayed up the close at the cockatoo bar in Pollokshaws Rd.I was trying to figure out if they were round about the weighing building in Hospital St. or up at the end of Thistle St going towards Dixon Blazes.

Amelia, there's a site on Facebook called The Dampies, for ex-residents and friends. There are over 200 members, and they all chat away and share old photos. Perhaps some folk on here would like to join...it's good craic!
Re: new flats in Gorbals
Hi amelia, the photo that admin posted were one of the hutchie blocks, I am sure there was another block right enough nearer Caledonia rd, I will check my photo files
I worked in Babcocks Renfrew, from 1974 and I met a former work mate, he lived there and even then he was talking of dampness
