Picking up from the thread "Back Court Singer" the mention of Milanda wrapped bread reminded me that we used to get sent - at midnight - to the, then existing, independent bakers to get newly baked, wonderful smelling, hot rolls (well fired, if possible!) and that was before bread was pre-sliced and mechanically wrapped in greaseproof paper. I can still remember the bakers removing batches of loaves from the ovens.
Edit: I can't remember what the rolls cost, probably a ha'penny each??

Re: Fresh baked Bread
Talking about fresh baked bread...I remember the bread from Galbraith's on Sandyfaulds Street right next to the pend and they had newly baked bread brought in in the morning and it was steaming...It was called plain bread and had a dark brown crust on the top and a lighter brown crust on the bottom...It was lovely when you put butter, if you were lucky, or margarine on it and it melted before it was spread...I can still smell and taste it...Like the Bisto Boys......aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh...delicious.
Re: Fresh baked Bread

Re: Fresh baked Bread
There were a few bakers that I remember there was Reids at the top of Cumberland St. at Eglinton St.The other one was in Nelson St. just around from St Johns girls school in Tradeston St. we used to go to it and buy a roll and eat the middle of the roll and then the other was was in the pend in Gorbals st but you went up a bit of spare ground in Surrey st and shouted down through a window at the baker for rolls. But the one I loved was going to the one up the pend in Eglinton St at the junction of Pollokshaws rd. next to it was a bit of spare ground were there was a coffee stall on it so your mother told you not to go near it as thats were the bad people hung about a crowd of us boys and girs used to go up at night time. Brilliant!!

Forgot to say do you remember a loaf called a French loaf it had two humps on it one bigger than the other that also was brilliant bread. Co-operatives bread used to be good out the shand shop in Ballater St by Waddell St, and the tipsy cakes and coffee buns were to die for. My mouth is watering here.

Hi Jimbo,
Your mention of fresh baked bread reminded me of Milanda brand and was the wrapper a green
colour. I can remember if I turned left coming out of my tenement I would immediately hit the main road and there was a pub immediately on the right which I believe eventually was called "The Office"
But if I turned left out of my tenement and went about 500 yards right in front of me was a
paint factory and if I turned immediatly left I went through a tunnel and I believe there was a baker s
in that tunnel or just before it.
I used to walk to that paint store and you used to love to smell the paint and to this day I love the smell of a freshly painted room.!!
But I was wondering if Rosie Stuksis or anyone can remember the two factories I seem to remember
getting through that Tunnel or lane as quickly as possible it was not well lit.
As a 13 year old I did deliver 25 dozen rolls for 6 days a week< Johnsons Rolls> and I loved the
burnt ones .
Best regards Reg

So Wellcroft Place ran into Eglinton Street. Another absolute gem yet again .But any views on the
opposite end . e.g The baker s and the Paint factory.??
Keep up the good work Jimbo.!

Re: Fresh baked Bread
I wondered what that street was called.... lol! Not sure that there are the other views that you mention, but someone else may know better.
Re: Fresh baked Bread
Wellcroft place was always a queer dull place I think you could go into it from Eglington St. and also next to Reids the bakers shop in Cumberland St. I stayed just down the road from it in Salisbury St.
Do you remember the foot clinic that used to be there it was at the corner of Abbotsford Place and Cumberland St.
Somebody mentioned the dumpling the shop that used to sell it was in Florence St. just off Rutherglen Rd. I think they sold pigs feet and ribs in it. One of the woman who worked in it I think was Minnie Smith she came from Florence St. just before Hutchy Grammar school. I might be wrong the old brain isn't as good as it used to be.
