Terry Dooley

Post by redscot »

Hello..I am wondering if anyone knows or has heard of Terry Dooley from Waterside St, he came from a really big family...maybe 16. Terry was a pal of my brothers' but I have always wondered through the years where is he? If you can help I'd be grateful for any input.

Thanks
Rosemary

Hi Rosemary, unfortunatly Terry died about 10 years ago, he never moved far from Waterside St only around the corner to Benthall St. I knew him and quite a few of his large family, very few people in the Gorbals in the seventies and eighties didnt know one of the Dooley's.

Thanks so much for getting back to me and I am very saddened to hear that. I have lived in Australia for 39 years and I am going to Scotland in May...I was hoping to tell my brother I had found Terry so he could make contact...now I have to take back sad news.

Thanks for answering my post..

Hi Rosemary,Sorry it was sad news I had to give you about Terry.
You are in for a bit of a shock if you havent been back to Glasgow for 39 years,
They have flattened most of the Gorbals twice and have rebuilt or are in the process of rebuilding twice in that time.Funny enough Waterside St,Benthall st, Turnlaw st and part of Mcneil st are the only complete streets they left completly alone. There are a couple of tenements in Ballatter St, the derelict one in Gorbals St a few in Norfolk st/Coburg st and maybe one or two others.
Other than that it was 99 percent demolished. Pretty sad really.
Anyway ,have a lovely trip, hope you bring some of that Aussie sunshine with you.

This is a very sad day for me to hear this news. I am just so sad to hear Terry has passed. Terry and I were friends as young teenagers. The last time I saw him was 1971 or 1972 and we had a very short conversation. I’ve lived in Canada 40 years now and have often wished I could have contacted Terry and said a couple of things to him. I did try finding him through the internet but never could, and I really regret that I’ll never get that chance now to tell him what I wanted to say. I hope Terry had a really good life, short as it was.
God Bless you Terry and rest in peace. Sheila xx (Tibby, as Terry used to call me)

Hello Cockatoo
I guess this is what happens when you wonder where old friends are, and when you finally find out, it's not always good news.
I have been back twice..in 91 & 03 and I only passed Oatlands while in a bus, I'm not going to go and see what they have done as it will destroy my memory of Oatlands and in my mind I always want it to look like I last saw it. I'm only in Glasgow for 5 days anyway. I used to work in McNeil St at the Co-operative bakery but I guess that building is no more. I understand that times move on, but why couldn't they just renovate some of those tenements, have 2 on the landings instead of 3. Those red sandstone buildings on Rosebery St were just great buildings and would have lasted for years, at least on the outside. I've been watching the news on the rotten weather you are having, so I'll throw some sunshine in my case and bring it with me ;)
Thanks for your sad, but nice message Cockatoo.
Rosemary.

Hi Rosemary if you come over for a holiday why not go to the bowling club in the Oatlands it's in the same spot as it has always been, most of the people that use it are from the Gorbals and you can maybe find some of Terrys family I'm sure someone will know. Hope you have a good holiday. Let us know what you think of the new Gorbals.

Hi Amelia,
I'm coming back up to Glasgow for a weeks holiday this September, last year when I visited the soo-side [1st time in nearly 45 years] I stood outside the Bowling green club and looked over the road at where Fauldhouse st once stood [where I was born n bred] and it was all changed with new buildings. This time I think I will ask permission to go into the club and see if I can speak to some of the people there. I went to the Pig and Whistle last year and will pop in there again if God Spares me.

Danny :)

Hello Amelia

Thank for your suggestion about going to the Oatlands Bowling Club...actually my brother was a member and played competition bowls for the club for quite some time, and he took me there in 2003. I don't think he plays bowls anymore, but there were a few really nice guys in the club, he had a wee mate who also played bowls and he is deaf and dumb, but a funny wee guy. Danny if I were you I would explain your situation and hopefully they will let you in to the club so you can meet some of the locals and hopefully get some answers to any questions you might have.
Amelia if I do visit Oatlands/Gorbals I'll be sure to let you know my thoughts on it all.
