Hot Baths.
Now that we have talked about the "Steamie" how about the Hot Baths...I used to go on a Friday night out to the Oatlands Baths and wait in the queue with the towel under you arm and the soap tucked into the towel. The women who worked there would clean out the bath and fill it before you got in and then you had about half and hour to get into it and dry off...Your legs and the rest of you were pure red from the heat of the water and you could not cool it down because the woman had the key to the taps...But it sure felt good when you were walking home especially on the cold nights...You are roasting from the inside out...First time I came back from the US with my husband he could not believe he had to go somewhere for his bath...Lots of things surprised him first time around...He got used to it on later visits...Ha. Ha.

Remember before I came up to Castlemilk when I went for a hot bath I would either go to Rutherglen Rd. or the Oatlands I used to take the 4 kids and dump them into the bath after I was finished and give them a bath it sure was hard work with the womean shouting for me to hurry up as there was a queue waitng to go in

Yes changed days when today we just turn the shower on and your right you couldn't turn the taps on/off it was the attendant who done this from the outside. When you were finished you felt great as you said, I lived in number 40 Fauldhouse st that was the last close in the street and just more or less opposite the Oatlands baths [upstairs]. Your husband must have found it strange at first !!!!

Yes, Danny, the Rutherglen Road baths were just along from Twomax up a wee lane with gates on it...
The Steamie was in there, too.
I know I guess I should have prepped Charlie before I took him home. Then we were living in Cathcart Road with an indoor toilet and the toilet had a pull chain as well...but my Mammy put a geezer (spelling?) and a sink in there for us coming home...We thought we were Toffs..ha. ha. When I went back the second time I had two boys and they loved the pull chain...Glad we did not have to pay for water because the bill would have been very high... Margaret, gbya
