penny buns

Post by freddy »

There was a wee jewish baker shop in Dunmore st. just beside our school. He sold these enormous buns for a penny. They were so big that some weans could hardly carry them. The underside was a flat light coloured crust. The top crust was dark, shiny and hard and inside was the most delicious soft bread smothered in cinnamon. Some teachers would allow us to eat these with our milk.Needless to say the milk break lasted longer than it was supposed to.I wonder if any jewish baker could baker could still make such a bun.I would be first in line to buy one. Freddy, I remember the bakery in Dunmore St. and the cinamon buns, you are dead right about the quality of them. Frank

I cannot remember the Jews bakery in Dunmore St. but I remember there was a place that they plucked the hens in it as my brother-in-laws worked in it. But I can remember there was a Jews bakery next to the lane up from our chapel in Bedford St. was there also one at Thistle or Hospital off Old Rutherglen Rd?
