money lender

Post by amelia »

Does anyone remember the moneylender who had a shop just down from the church in Hospital St. at Caledonia Rd. my mother used to deal with him he wrote what amount we borrowed in a wee tiny book and the windows of the shop were all painted so that no-one could look into it.
I think that was all he did and I cannot remember if he was opened every day or just at the weekend.
I am going back about 70+ years
I ought to get a life it is my birthday today and here am I sitting writing into the site

Hi Robin+Amelia,
Yes the old pawn shop was a life saver for a lot of people in those far off days, I remember going to "John the pawn" in Braehead st with my wee Granny Hendry and sitting in the wee cubicle. Money lenders I cant remember any but when I was an apprentice bricklayer one of the Bricklayers I worked with a Willie Clemence used to go to one up the toon every Thursday night [day before pay day and it was all cash in those days] and he would borrow a £1 note for a bit of rolling tobacco and a few pints and a wee hawf of whisky. I remember every Friday when he got his wages he said to me I must be a fool cause he had to pay back the £1+ 5 shillings interest but he still did it come next Thursday night ha ha. So between the Money lender and the pawn shop it was all part of our lives then.
Regards.
Danny :)
