Santa's a Scotsman

Hi All,

I usually listen to Radio 2 in the morning so I can listen to Ken Bruce, he makes me laugh with his comments, and I also like to join in on the pop quiz he does every day. The other half and I get together with a cup of tea and see how many answers we can get between us, good fun.

Anyway, on today's programme he played a song called " Santa's A Scotsman " the both of us nearly choked on our cuppa and we fell about laughing, it was hilarious, a great tune and plenty of bagpipes in it and very catchy music. Ken Bruce said he is determined to get it to No1 for Christmas, I hope he does. Well worth a listen if you get a chance to hear it, it will bring a smile to your face, I promise.

Anyway, thanks for the info on this. I viewed it on youtube too and loved it. Especially the bit about too many pies and not enough exercise. Oh and the pudding supper as well. Glad you enjoyed it> I think its a great wee song and I love the sound of the bagpipes, they always make me feel proud to be a Scotsman, it is almost a clarion call as it makes you want to go home and be with yer ain folk. How lucky we Scots are, the bond is so strong with country and our ain folk, don't you think?

Thought the humour in the song was great.
I was never much for bag pipes when I was younger, but now I get a lump in my throat when I hear them. My sister arranged for a bagpiper for my wedding and I remember being mad at her (God rest her soul) as I just wasn't into it. Now I'm glad she did! When my daughter was getting married we had the same argument. lol Finally she listened to some songs and loved them so she had a piper at her wedding and it was beautiful. I agree that the bond amongst Scots is really strong and sometimes it does make you long for your ain folk.

I haven't had the chance to hear that song yet, so must get on to you tube and have a listen to it. Talking of bagpipes Sheila, John and myself had a piper at our wedding 12 years ago and with John all decked out in his kilt it was just magic...but when I went to the markets yesterday I picked up a cd of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, it was only $2 so a great wee bargain. I saw them live when they came to Oz a few years back and I always remember Johns son-in-law (who is German) saying it was a German who wrote Highland Cathedral (my favourite)....so my reply to that was...aye but it takes a Scot to play it...he wisny too happy. It doesn't matter how long you have lived away from your homeland, Scotland will always be my home, and when we play Scottish music, especially at Hogmany that's when I long for my ain folk most.

I think you'll get a laugh at Santa's a Scotsman.
Funny you mentioned "Highland Cathedral" that was the song my daughter chose to be piped into her wedding. Although it's usually played for sober events as a lament, she didn't care, she loved it. She picked several others such as Scotland the brave etc and another song she picked was "Bridge over troubled water", the piper learned it just for her. The piper that played for them won first place in the World Championships (the young category as he was only 17) the following year in Scotland. His Dad and Uncle are both former world champions and they all play for the Simon Fraser pipe band out of Vancouver and compete in Scotland every year. We had a young girl piper at our wedding can't recall what she piped, was too long ago to remember, people have done three life sentences for murder and are out in less time than me.
I don't listen to any Scottish stuff at Hogmanay but at 4pm here which is midnight in Scotland, I always raise a glass to my ain folk in Bonnie Scotland. Usually a minute later one of my friends or cousins will phone me so I don't feel left out, God love them and I always appreciate it. Thinking maybe I'll visit again at New Year, so if anyone's having a party, John, Amelia, anyone? let me know. Cheers, Sheila

HI All,

Oh the pipes, I love them. Highland Cathedral is one of my favourites also, it was played by a Pipe Major at my young Sister's ( Janice ) funeral amongst others including The Skye Boat Song. What a job he done, we could still hear him playing up at her grave site as we were leaving the cemetery. He came, as invited, to our get together at the pub that afternoon, just as well, as we all forgot to bring back her St Andrews flag that draped her coffin, which he had folded over his arm, bless him. He was well rewarded I can assure you, I never met a man who could consume so much whisky! Ever heard a really drunk piper play his pipes? We did, the whole evening and he was great . All my family send him Christmas cards every year, I think we have adopted him really!
