Curious as to what a box of these cost now, also do they come in a 1lb box? I can buy them here in a 400g box and just wondering if it's a bigger box in the UK? Thanks for any info? Cheers, Sheila

Hi Sheila,

I bought my other half a big box of milk tray earlier this year weighing 600g, about a pound and a quarter I believe, for £5.00 on a special offer at the Coop. We are still eating them now, 10 months later!

Thanks for the info. This 400g box just looks so small to me and I paid just over 7 pounds for it. Bought it as a wee extra Christmas gift for my daughter, unfortunately, had to try one or two myself so guess who's having to go get another one? Will be on the look out for some of those 600g ones when I get back over there. You and your wife are still eating yours 10 months later? They'll go foosty if you don't devour them soon! Hi Sheila I wish you could taste the chocolates I buy from Silverburn which is a big shopping mall in Pollok they are to die for. They have every flavour blueberry, lime etc. I tried to count how much they would cost and I think it is roughly about 30/40p each but the cream is yon soocky cream if you know what I mean.
Must have a look and see what price the Cadburys chocs are but they are doing 2 boxes of Terrys Old Gold for £4 milk or plain I think the are 1lb boxes. I bet your mouth is watering Sheila my man is after bringing me in a choc ice cream block 5 for £1 out of Iceland.

Hi Amelia, Shelia and John,
Aw this talking about chocs has made my mouth water, do you know what I love to do here in London well I love to go into the 99 p or £1 shops and I always buy my Lassies a box of after 8's which compared to the £3 or so they ask for in the big supermarkets is a big saving. Being a pensioner now I v'e got to be a bit canny with the money [havent we all !!]. I also love buying Wagon wheels there's 3 in the packet but not as big as the ones I remember when I was a wean in the soo-side, I never thought these 99 pence shops would take off but here in London they're always packed out and have some great bargains. I must have a look at the prices in the supermarkets to see what the price is for the boxes of Dairy box etc chocs are. Speak to you all later folks, take care.

Well Amelia I'm absolutely drooling at your description of those chocolates. I go to Silverburn when I'm over there so will check that out for sure. Thanks. We have a big famous chocolate company here called Purdy's and they sell all the different flavours too, but sometimes I find the chocolate too rich. Oh and chocolate ice bars....... loved them! I would go visit my Granny on a Saturday night and she would always treat her and I to them. I could be wrong but I think in those days they were made by Walls? Do they still have ice cream vans in Castlemilk Amelia? I remember one in Castlemilk (think it was Polosky's or something like that) and he sold chocolate drumsticks (ice cream covered in chocolate) and I absolutely loved them.

Danny, I visited quite a few of the pound stores over there. Ours here are called dollar stores. At first I felt what we pay a dollar for you were all paying a pound for and felt you were getting ripped off, that was until I saw the biscuits, chocolates, and other food stuff that we don't have in our stores and I was amazed! As you say if someone has to watch their funds especially if they're on a pension, it's a great deal. I'm a few years away from the pension myself but still love a great bargain.

The pound shops are all over Glasgow we have one in Castlemilk I was buying 2 bayonet light bulbs in it but I stopped because they weren't lasting very long and they used to explode when thy were done. They sell practically everything all cleaning stuff. The one in Argyle you cannot get moving in it sometimes they sell even milk and bread. When I was over in Canada seeing my niece we went into them they didn't have them here at the time and we all thought thy were brilliant. You're right Danny about the wagon wheels I bought my son a packet the other week out of Iceland and they weren't the size they used to be but then all the biscuits are the same
We had bad thunder and lightning here last night about 11;30pm thought something had exploded outside but I love watching the lighting.it lit up t whole room weird. It's a terrible day here hasn't stopped raining g love anyone that homeless and sleeping outside.

Hi Shiela they still have some vans not as much as they used to but when I came up to Castlemilk I stayed at the end of Ardmaleish windows looked into the 5 apartments in Sravannan Rd d there used to be Tonys who came around our way he stayed in Burnside it must have been all the Castlemilk punters that helped pay his mortgage

I think there is still a van that goes around Holmbyre and Blaeloch because I hear my niece speaking about it I think it sells everything, and there is one around Tormusk.

My hubby drove the butchers van (Holmes now that is a name you don't forget) when he came out of the army after doing his National Service remember they had a shop in Lawmoor St. between Ballater St /Rutherglen Rd and one in Crown St.

Hi Amelia,

Yes I remember Holmes's meat very well. You were almost taking your life in your hands when you bought meat there, you needed to be very careful with mince particularly. My Mum used to ask them to put a slice of bread through the mincer before her chosen piece of meat was put through the machine! I can remember seeing some rather dodgy meat there at times it used to have a bit of a green hue to it!
