creamola foam

I was in shopping at St Enochs Square and there in the middle of it was a stand with 2 guys selling what they said was Creamola foam they had wee tumblers to taste it but I was laden and couldn't be bothered putting my bags down to taste it. They said it was the same but I think they called it something like Krakatoa or something like that my old brain is getting addled you'll have to excuse me has anyone else seen it??
I know a shop in Argyle St. was selling M&B bars but they weren't the same. Does anyone remember Glickmans over at the barras they were on the London Rd. side they had practically every sweetie under the sun I think they made them on the premises. And what about the whelk shop I went over there the a couple of months ago and bought about 5 bags of whelks and mussels and I think I was nearly a £10 When you are a pensioner you can do daft things and get away with it

Hi Amelia...I do not remember Creamola foam...Is that a sweetie? But I do remember the whelks...There was a woman who sold them outside Toby's Ice Cream and Fish Supper Shop on Cumberland Street almost outside the Paragon...She sold them just before the matinee every Saturday afternoon in the summer...So when we went to the pictures in the afternoon, we bought a bag of whelks and got a pin with them to scoop the meat out of the shell...Now when I think of it, can you imagine the cleaning up they had to do to sweep up all those shells for the opening of the pictures on a Saturday night..or if they did that at all...The Paragon was not the Cinerama or the Gaumont in those days....I don't think I could eat them now...Too scunnery...But I do love mussels...yummy...Hope you have your Christmas shopping all done...I am almost finished...Did you make any of those cupcake recipes I sent you.. Creamola foam was a "ginger" and I remember drinking it, that and American cream soda. In fact when we moved out to south Nitshill in the very early 60's we used to buy a bottle of American cream soda and a few scoops of ice-cream and put the ice=cream into a glass of the cream soda OH what a treat, we got this from one of the wee vans that used to drive round our housing estate. I went into the Paragon a few times Mags for the mattinee when I was a wean [I'm an old wean noo lol], wasn't it funny when you went into the pictures at first it was really dark and the usherette had to shine her torch to show you to your seat but once you sat down your eyes got used to the dark, then when the interval came the lady with the tray selling ice cream tubs etc would appear and you tried to be first in the queue cause if you were last the lights would go out and you stood a chance of stumbling on the stairs in the dark with your hands full. Oh Amelia how I love mussels too, I could eat them till the coos came home yes great memories.

My memories are exactly the same as yourself. Creamola was a particular favourite amongst us kids of the day, but the American Cream Soda with ice cream served in a glass was just out of this world. I remember Ceamola foam, we used to take a couple of tins with us when I took my brothers and my nieces to Butlins for the week. Raspberry and Cola were their favourite flavours. Can' t remember for sure how many spoonfuls of the powder you had to add.

Hi Everyone I loved American cream soda with icecream still make an icecream drink if I buy a bottle . Those guys had all the wee plastic tubs or tumblers to use as samples (not the kind the doctor gives you)
to tast it Anyway they had all the flavours on show.

Gosh Danny you must be just a wean if you cannot remember Creamola Foam but then you came from the Oatlands you were all a wee bit better class. you would be buying the real macoy

Margaret the woman who sold the whelks name was Mary O'lone her mans name was Sonny they came from the low down house at the pen in Commercial Rd. there was about 21 in their family the reason I know this was my better half came from there and my grannie and aunties lived there infact my uncle Wulie (who also sold whelks but he went round the streets with a barrow rented it from Hyslops up the pen in Gorbals St) was married to Sonnys sister.

Anyone remember the penny vantas you could buy now that was another drink och! I'm way to bed I'm rabbiting on here. That man Sammy McGhee was buried out of St Margaret Marys this morning you ought to have seen the police escort and thecrowds ther they had 4 cycle cops all coming up Camunnock Rd. this morning when I was going out

You know, Amelia, now when I that have memory hat on, that lady was always pregnant and being that I did not know that at the time, I remember asking my mother why she was always fat in the belly and my mother told me she eats too many of her whelks...

Hey Danny, you must have had more money than me it seems you went to the balcony in the Paragon..We never could afford that luxury..I do remember the wee ladies in all the picture halls who sold the ice cream and the orange drink at the intermission...

Remember when you went to the pictures then, you saw two movies, the news and the trailers on in the one sitting...I think you went in and six and were out at nine o'clock..Now that I think of it, those pictures must not have been as long as they are now...Now you only get one show and all the trailers that last at least fifteen minutes and they are so loud, at least here in the States they are..

My husband kept asking me had I ever tried Creamola Foam and I said I had never heard of it...I thought he meant American Creaming Soda...anyway when I was back in Glasgow in May, I was told there was a Scottish sweetie shop up near the Trongate. Off I go looking into this shop, which is called 'Mrs Mitchells Sweetie Shop' so I go to stock up on things I haven't had for years, MB bars, candy balls, lucky totties,
Irn-Bru frying pans etc. Then I spied this packet of stuff called Krakatoa. I asked the woman what it was and she says Creamola Foam, so I only bought the one packet in case it wasn't right. But when I got home to Oz hubby was like a wee boy getting his hit of Creamola Foam...it's an unusual taste but quite nice. I have never been to Glickmans' although have heard lots about it. Could never come at whelks Amelia, but loved the mussels in the jar of vinegar. By the way my bill for the sweetie shop was 28 pounds...but I never telt hubby

An iced drink made with American cream soda was a special treat in the Red Star café with it`s high backed ornate wooden seats and cold Italian marble tabletops. But a penny vantas from Sadies chippy at the corner of South Portland street could be just as good.A very merry Christmas to everyone at gorbals anecdotes. Surreyboy.
