Circus in Thistle st

Post by norrie »

Do any of you remember the Circus coming to Thistle st and if you why was it held in the street
I have seen a film clip on another web site and the question was asked
There was a low down window and a little girl sitting in a chair watching the goings on, the camera was turned on her several times, was the circus for her?
Any ideas?

Yes Norrie i have seen this film clip on British Pathe news. The film clip was about the news that Billy Smart had died in 1966. It says that Billy Smarts love for children was boundless and that in 1954 he heard of a disabled gorbals child in Thistle St. who couldn't visit his circus so he took the circus to her and gave her the best day of her life. :) I have posted the link to the video there are stills on the site too. :)

Hi Norrie+Josie,
That was a very kind act by Sir Billy Butlin to bring the circus to the Gorbals for that wee lassie, I wonder was this the same time that the Elephants paraded through another part of Glasgow, I think it was Northside of Glasgow ?
Regards Danny :)

Hey Danny, It was Billy Smart who brought his circus to Thistle St. Although his great friend Billy Butlin was mentioned and appeared in the newsreel as well. Also the time the elephants were paraded through Glasgow streets was in 1952, it was Chipperfields Circus. I remember we covered both these topics on the Dampies page Danny. :-)

Hi Amelia
The Dampies is a face book site [named after the blocks of flats in the Gorbals that were saturated with damp=dampies] :)
Regards
Danny :)
