Valentine's Day

Post by margaretmcgettigan »

Remember years ago when you used to send Valentine's Day cards and not sign them...As well as sending the card, you wrote all these wee verses on them...I think the girls sent more of these cards than the boys did...Poems were usually four lines long and you wrote all over the envelope, too.

Roses and Red
Violets and Blue
Angels in Heaven
Know How I love you.

then

Postie Postie do your duty
Take this to my Blue/Brown eyed beauty.

One I made up with a girl I worked with when we worked in McLean's the Bookmakers.

I wish I was a Slim Jim tie
Around your Eckstein Shirt
Then I would always be close to you
And you would never flirt.

Dating myself talking about Eckstein Shirts. eh!!!!

Shakespeare we were not but we had so much fun composing it and then sending out these wee poems and always wished we would get some in the mail...I remember getting one once and was teased about it mercilessly by my family...

Happy Valentine's Day to all... ;) ;) ;)

Hi Mag,
Hope you and all out lady members had a lovely Valentines day, I only ever have received one Valentines day card in my life, that's when I was 11 years old in the soo-side, ach maybe get one next year :).
Yes I sent a few in my time and of course you never mention your name. I did send a card to a barmaid in a pub I used to use in London and put a verse on it which said =Roses are red, Violets are blue. Nobody pulls better beer than you !!!! lol.
Then on another care I write Oh sweetheart oh sweetheart I think you're the most-- If I was the butter would you be the toast. Maybe that's why I never get any Valentines day cards ha ha.
Take care everyone and God Bless.
Regards.
Danny :)

Good Morning Margaret/Danny
I never got a valentines card in my whole life in fact my husband has only just started sending me birthday cards these last few years he's not a card person
I have just finished making valentine cards and had a couple of them left, if I would have known your address I would have sent you one and you could have shown it to all your pals telling them you can still pull the "birds" or should I say "auld hens"
I used to write a lot for some of the girls I worked with as they couldn't master writing out the cards and I have always loved writing and doodling. I remember one verse I used to put on them canna remember if I made it up when I was young..... Loving is a painful thrill....but not to love more painful still ....But oh it is the worst of pain.... to love and not be loved again .... So ?????? dear please tell me do ....Do you love me as I love you  whit a load of crap :D
I'm on to making Mothers day cards so I have got a couple of orders :D Your right Margaret it was always the lassies that sent cards.
When I g to my craft shows in the SECC you ought to see the crowds that come from all over Scotland as it is a big thing, anyway I'm getting back to making my cards Amelia

Enjoyed reading all the comments. Here where I live all the kids give a valentine's card to each class mate. It's awful cute seeing the wee ones come home with their big envelope full of cards.
Here's some of the ones I remember we used to put on the cards in our younger days.

Postie postie ring the bell,
if his/her Ma comes run like hell.

Postie postie don't be slow
Go like Elvis Go Man Go

My heart is like a cabbage divided into two
The leaves I give to others the heart I save for you

Them good auld days eh? Cheers, Sheila
