I left 391 Cumberland Street, Gorbals aged 6 months, D.O.B.21.11.58 to live in Carnwadric, Glasgow. Born to Irish ma'n'da, Anthony and Mary. Back then I had 4 brothers/2 sisters. Ma maw's still in same house/Bangorshill Street, Carnwadric. She used to run pubs in Gallowgate - The Fourways, The wee mill, Springfield Vaults etc. If she barred any of you, it's ok, the bar's lifted lol. Is there any old school up for "the craic?"

I attended Wee and Big Bonnys 50/60s but left Glasgow 1968. Can anyone tell me when the schools ceased teaching and when they were demolished? Remember standing in Alice Street where Big/Wee Bonnys were late 50s and watched that great big chimney at Dixons Blazes being blown up, dust and smoke everywhere after the explosion. There was a lot of boys and girls and adults watching - can anyone remember that day? Wee Danny.

Hi, can anyone remember the name of the chip shop at the bottom of Cavendish Street down from Mary Pirries sweet shop? Was it called Jacks? Also the names of the dairy and newsagent at the bottom of Salisbury Street? I might be getting mixed up because I think the dairy might be called Jacks. Also there was a fruit and veg shop halfway up Salisbury Street and I can not for the life of me remember the name of that shop either. Hope everyone is well - I haven't seen much from Rita recently - hope your peerie is still in action Rita.

Hi there Amelia. Still very much alive an kicking and very, very busy. I had a so-called retirement from full time employment last December. Don't know where the time goes. Still co-ordinate an addiction drama project in Easterhouse. So working part-time and have taken up voluntary work with Glasgow City Council. I am also helping my older Son Jim's wee Chinese wife Jessica prepare for her first baby. I can't wait - it's due any day now. It's a girl and she is going to call her Rita after me. I am looking for information or anyone that could be related to my grandad. He was Patrick James Boyle born Glasgow 1908, could have been Calmachie. He had a sister called Agnes who was born in Bridgeton in 1901 and a brother called John born Calmachie in 1904. Don't know of any other children but there parents were Francis Boyle and Rose Montford/Mountford who in 1900-1901 lived at 94 King Street, Tradeston. In 1935 Patrick married Mary Kilkie - at that time he was living at 122 Naburn Street Gorbals and Mary was living at 111 Oregan Street Gorbals. Other addresses I have for Patrick and Mary are late 30's early 40's - 132 South Portland Street which is the last address my father remembers and in 1946 they lived at 10 1/2 Eglinton Lane where Patrick died that year. F.A.O. George Duncan - there were hundreds of people called James Boyle in the Gorbals stretching from the early 40's to late 80's. It was a popular Irish name and still is - look up the telephone directory and you will see what I mean.

F.A.O. Tanis Mamo - I remember old Mr Wileman very well. He had a big moustache like the Kaiser. His son Davie was slightly disabled but ironically was a great ballroom dancer. Davie's disability took the form of a slight shaking, but In know for a fact that he taught my cousin how to dance. Davie had a great knack of making paper aeroplanes and all the weans in our bit of Lawmoor Street would be tearing up jotters so Davie could make us 'aeries'. Just in passing Lawmoor Street is South Wellington Street, the name was changed years ago. Some of the older people still called it South Wellington Street - when I was a boy it used to confuse me no end. I hope this has been of some help. Years later, I was in a pub in Dennistoun and the manager was a guy called Vic Wileman. I said I knew a man with that name and it transpired he was Davie's nephew - this was in the late 70s and he said Davie was still on the go then. Best of luck. FRANK YOUNG

F.A.O. John Miller - I lived at 287 Eglinton Street after the spare ground above Belchers paper shop. There was Alistair & Rena McLeod, Anne Williamson then me. We had 3 little brothers Sandy, Billy and Donnie. As you can see there was 2 families in one. My Mum and Dad were Highlanders - mainly spoke Gaelic. I believe there were a lot of Gaelic speaking people in the Gorbals around the early 40s and 50s.

Hi, not sure if that site is still active but I wonder if anyone might know about the side of my family that is a mystery to me. My grandfather was Denis Cook, brother of Alec Cook. They and their brothers and sisters grew up in the Gorbals in the 1910s and 1920s. They were a Catholic famly. He moved to Manchester where he met and married my grandmother and had 4 children, but before he left he fathered another child, a daughter who might have been named Susan. Family history has it that her mother (who may/ may not have been called Jeannie) was the love of his life, but as she was protestant they were not allowed to marry. If anyone knows anything about their story I'd love to hear it. Thank you.

In doing family history research, I've come across an ancestress who hails from The Gorbals at the turn of the last century, but I'm finding it extremely difficult to trace her - I wonder if any older relative of people reading / writing this have heard of her or her children - I would love to hear of it. Her name is Janet Ritchie, born about 1890's +, married a John Finlay (from Belfast) and produced 4 children: John Robert (eldest and my father in law, still alive), David, William Robert (sailor, died WWII) and Jean. Apparently Janet Finlay (nee Ritchie) moved back to Glasgow with her children but John was "sent back" to live with his dad whence he enlisted for army life. What Seniors Citizens are worth. Did you know old folk are worth a fortune? We have silver in our hair, gold in our teeth, stones in our kidneys, lead in our feet and gas in our stomaches!! I have become older since the last time I wrote in, a few changes have come into my life. Frankly I have became a frivolous woman!!! I am seeing 6 gentlemen everyday!! As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me out of bed and I immediately go to see Jimmy Riddle, then it's time for breakfast with Mr Kellog followed closely by the refreshing company of Mr Tetley or my other friend who I only know by his initials P.G. Then comes along someone I don't know at all....Arthur Itis, who knows he is not welcome but insists on being here and what is more, he stays with me the rest of the day. Even though he does not like to stay in one place, he takes me from joint to joint. After such a hectic day I am glad to get to bed(and with Johnnie Walker too!!) Oh yes I am now flirting with Mr Al Zheimer!! The priest came to call the other day and said that I should be thinking of the hereafter. I told him I did all the time. For no matter where I am, the bedroom, the kitchen, the sitting room, I ask myself...."Now what am I here after?" Well I'll close for now and hope that Will Power is your constant companion, but do make sure his friend Emma Royd does not creep up from behind. Hiya Agnes - maybe if you ran about Nicholson Street in the late sixties and seventies you would have known me. I was Christened that name by all the lassies in the Gorbals - you probably know the rhyme. I was always dancing. One of my best pals was Bud Flannigan. He was a tasty dancer. I used the Square Peg a lot in the 70s at St. Enochs Square but that was mostly a meeting point before we went out hunting the ladies. I also ran about Bedford Street, winching in the Bedford or the Colly in those days. Great days Agnes, take care hen.

F.A.O. Thomas Watt - hi there. My father's name was Thomas Watt and he was born in Glasgow in Scotland. He has two brothers, Joseph and Lawrence and a sister, Maria, who was known as Ria. He and my mother and siblings (four brothers and a sister) used to live in the Gorbals area of Glasgow before moving to 9 Lunderston Drive, Househillwood, Priesthill, Glasgow, which is a suburb of Glasgow Town and where I was born. He was married to my mother, Mary McLelland, and they had seven children, I think. We grew up as a family of six children with my father and mother, but believe that we had a sister named Elizabeth who died when she was 2 1/2 years old from Diptheria. I am trying to make up a family tree but have not been very successful mainly due to the fact that I have very scant information to go on. If anyone thinks they knew my father or any of his relations or my mother, and has any information on them that would help me build a family tree then I would be grateful to hear from them. Thanks.

F.A.O. Thomas Horn - talking about another amazing corner situation when Celtic scored from a corner then you might remember it was at Falkirk and it ended 3-3 thanks to the corner. The biggest laugh in the soo side that day was that Jock Weir who lived in Thistle Street (an ex Celtic player) was playing for Falkirk that day. He had a bet on with his grannie (Lizzie Bailey the bookie) that Celtic would win. Jock took the corner and re-took it and scored - amazing day. Poor old Jock! Do you remember that one?

I read that Dixons Blazes was closed in 1958 which was about the time we were exiled to Castlemilk. Could it be a coincidence or were we allowed to live in The Gorbals to burn off the gas which was produced in the coke ovens. I don't know. I just know that when Dixons Blazes closed we got electric lights on the roads. Another wee thing about the Dixons. They were quite active here in Gothenburg and built a huge Scottish like castle south of Gothenburg. There are libraries and bath houses named after them in Gothenburg. James Fredrik Dixon and Blanche Dixon were the builders of the mansion. James Dixon died of lead poisoning after wrapping the lead seal from a wine bottle around a cut on his finger. I have heard but cannot confirm that Blanche also died of lead poisoning. They should have stuck to Lanlique like the rest of us. There is a website for the mansion - "Tjoloholmsslott". Nice place to live but yea wid need a load a shullins tae paye fur the gas.

"F.A.O. Auld Biddy - not to worry ma dear about my friend T.Q, he is doing well as can be. I dressed up as a Highlander kilt n all and painted ma charlie chase blue , and a chanter kidding on I was playing it , got them all dancing jigs n reels ...American and Mexicans love the Scots n Irish and I got the first prize a bottle of grand mac nish and Drambuie , we do not drink so I donated them back for second prize a lovely basket of fruit and other goodies , so I was up half the night eating the chocalatey stuff yummers...It was a great night and I hope every one else has had a happy halloweentrick or treat give me some thing nice to eat if u dont u can smell ma feet no singing or dancing from this generation just fill ma pillowcase up wi candy...All the best to every one DAM"
