Just discovered your page I was born and brought up in Salisbury St the continuation of Warwick st or Nicholson St as it was renamed. Went to St. Johns infant school there then on to St Johns at Tradeston st then up to Holyrood. Remember when England & Scotland played at Hampden we would all stand in Pollokshaws rd and cheer the buses as they went by and the people threw out money to us. Do you remember hislops were you got a barra and people would do flittings in it. My uncle used to go round the streets and sell whelks, he came from Commercial Rd. I married a guy from Commercial Rd got a wee single end in Lawmoor st then my auntie took me to her factors and I got a room and kitchen at the top end of Moffat st near Barneys bar had cousins in Moffat st also my grannie, aunties and cousins came from there. They all went to St Lukes school. I worked in Twomax from 50's until I started having my family. Moved up to Castlemilk from Moffat st when the sooside was pulled! down. I remember going to the may procession my cousin was a page boy at one of them. Does anyone remember Charlies the cafe in Rutherglen rd used to sit there for hours with my pal who came from Errol st.

I'm currently writing a thesis on Glaswegian society. The Gorbals is a heavy feature in it, thus I would like to know of a good website, that has pictures and extensive location descriptions. Anything will help! Thank you.

I am actually looking for a lady by the name of Ceelie or Jessie Mcdonald Mclaughlin/Currie. She had a daughter in Dec 65 and called her mary, the fathers name was Daniel Currie but Ceelie left his home and went to live in Oatlands or the Gorbals with mary and lived with her husband, a Mr Mclaughlin, but she deserted them both and he had mary put into care. If anybody knows of this lady please can they get in touch. Many thanks

Do you (or might someone else you can think of) know of the Pope family who lived at 371 Caledonia Road? My mother, Janet Johnston Pope, was born (30th., September, 1916) and grew up there. She left in the late thirties or early forties when her moher died. I don't know whether her father, Murdoch McLeod Pope(a joiner journeyman)continued living there alone, or moved, or, perhaps, remarried. It is possible that he lived there from as early as before the first wold war through until the tenements were demolished, when, if he hadn't already gone, he would, presumably, have been rehoused. So, did you know anyone of that name living elsewhere? Any information, observations, ideas I could follow up, or, whatever, would be very gratefully received.

What I find very funny about being brought up in the gorbals is that when you meet fellow scotsmen, to put on a "hard image" they often tell you that they were from the Gorbals. But when you ask them what school they went to, or what street they came from, they often become muddled and then you realise its all a made up story to accentuate some sort of image they want to build up about themselves. It happened only a few weeks ago. A guy in a bar was boasting that he had been born and brought up in the Gorbals but when I "cross examined" him it turned out he was from Motherwell and had only passed through the old Gorbals on a bus!!! I suppose the legend of the Gorbals lives on but beware of Gorbals fakes...they're everywhere!!!

My family was called Meikleham, I remember drunks sleeping up the close and I had to go to a outside toilet with newspaper as toilet roll on a string, it was freezing in winter, my mam and dad slept in the living room in a alcove with curtains, there was a settee and 2 chairs, a sink and a cooker and we used to get bathed in front of the fire in metal bath. I can remember mam and DAd wallpapering and having to clog all the holes us with newspaper we then moved to Castlemilk were we had a bathroom I lives at Ballintaye Rd and have been back to Glasgow last year to have a look at our old house in castlemilk. I am now looking for 2 friends I knocked about with in castlemilk Ca! rol Anderson & Laura McAlease.
