Hi Looking for anyone who has Photographs of 534 Gallowgate Glasgow, it was a Pen (not a close) and anyone who went to St Marys Primary School around the 1960s. My family lived near the car market, I heard it used to be a cattle market, near Abercromby st. I would be grateful if anyone has pics or lived in the Gallowgate around this period. Does anyone have any info on Janet Todd (born 1914, died 1981) of the Gorbals (Thistle Street - same building as Pat Crerand I think) who married Robert Stewart of Maryhill in 1932? Her mother was also called Janet Todd (from Milton) and she married William Murphy of Ireland. Also, any info on John Murphy - father of William above (born about 1831 in Ireland and married Helen McIntyre in 1867 in the Gorbals? I came from 238 Nicholson St stayed their from 1962-1972, I'm just lookin for anyone who remembers us. Their were 11 of us Violet, Sid, Linda, Jojo, Carol, Frank, Ian, Sherry, Margo, Robert, Paul copeland. We went to st johns p school. My mum was known as Peggy and my dad Olly. Any info welcome. I went to St. Francis junior at 5yrs old. Remember crying when my Ma left me, was my first day. Grew up at 79 Naburn St '1936. Dad worked at Dixons Blazes, he caught a sort of illness there and passed away at 49 yrs young. I remember going to the Paragon on Sat afternoon with my pals and we all had a penny bag of whelks even gave us a pin to yank them oot. We also made "Bogies" from a board, widden boax, nailed two sticks on tap fur "honnle bors", nailed a skate on the bottom. These came 50 years before Skate Boards. Used to get some Carbide from the street lighter and spit on it to see it bubble, got oan yer hauns it wiz gae soar. Went and caught some "Hudgies" dreeped aff the dykes, fell doon a "dunny" played "pever" hop scoatch, went to the Crownie and saw Flash Gordon. Went to the Barras tae get some bargains frae the wee "black johnnys" went to Barrowland Ballroom, alwas fights there between the Hammer Gang and San Toi. went to St.Francis and we had a Geog. Teacher Miss Graham, and the terror of the math class Mr. Connoly, he had a brush cut and Hitler moustache, whacked yer nuckles with his ruler and if the homework wasn't done, you got the strap! Had to run down to the front of the close with all our suitcases when we had air raids.

Just found your site, it brought back many forgotten memories. I was born at 141 Sandyfauld St on 1953, moved across the street to no. 122 next to Betty's the wee sweety shop. My fathers name was Eddie Mulligan and my mother was well known as big Cathie (nee duke) was originally from 358 mathieson st. I would be glad to hear from anyone who remembers us. One of my favourite memories is of Annie Knotts's restaurant in florence st were you could get a big bowl of soup and a bowl of hot rice pudding for fourpence, before heading to the george or palace picturehouse on a saturday afternoon, great stuff eh!

Any info on James McKay who killed his mother at Main Street Gorbals in the 1920's. Cut her up and left her on banks of the Clyde. He was executed at Duke Street Prison, obviously address now Gorbals Street, and house long demolished. Researching for a book. Many thanks. M

ASSISTANCE: I'm researching cases of execution in Scotland in 20th C and Patrick Carracher of Gorbals was a cause celebre. Does anyone have info on him. Also Catherine McLuskey who was killed by PC robertson at Prospecthill Rd in 1955, she had kids. Another case is that of the Robertsons who were both sentenced to death in the 1940's for gassing their children on Eglinton street about 1942, both reporieved. Many thanks to those who have helped me with the case of Alexander CROSBIE, John LENNIE & John LYONS who was executed. Does anyone know if Mrs Lyons formerly Mary Crosbie is still alive? I am trying to find out if anyone knew my parents Seamus Houghton or Rita Houghton (Nee McPhearson) They lived in Sandifaulds street in the Gorbals. We later moved to Castlemilk and then to London. Sadly my mother died at the age of 45, and my father at 58. I would like to hear from any friends of theirs especially those who have a tale or two to tell.

I remember the Gorbals very well thanks to this site bring back the memories dan cronin and his mob trying to beat our family up in 320 Lawmoor st the chain and hatchet marks on the door even when we left there in the 50s! Rabbit eyes the polis screwing the shop in Lawmoor st stashing the gear in the middins and we would knock it off him he never touched campbells shop on the other side of lawmoor st the fights we had with the polis becuase of a stupid law that said two constituted a crowd. The fair fights in the glesca green j.l cumbie v b mc brig. Billy [initials only they know who they are if still alive] ended in a riot with knives hatchets I loved the Gorbals but it hated me I used a bayonet but I thank one person in this world before I die. I met a lovely lass from the calton [where I had many a good fight] she showed me a better life "put the knife away and come dancing" I loved her I feared the death penalty so the choice was easy but I think it must come back! I believed now when [lord carmon!] made it 7 years for razor slashing he was right on the mark mines went oot the windea. Yes I loved the Gorbals but I widnea bring my weans up in it but in all honesty there are worst places. Like others I started to wright about it I will keep trying but I may have run out of time sorry my younger cousin followed the advice I gave him [learn to fight] he did with avengence but he paid a price he may be doing well in the south of france with his belly dancing partner but he should have listened to the other advice I gave to him [if he can remember threw the pills and booze] give it up glad my younger bro followed my footsteps and gave jimmy up to follow me. To the person who wondering about the health issues I've had cancer 4 times when 52 53 55 56 my oolder bro has C when 68 years, young bro got C when 58, da died of C and we all lived near dixons, a wee bit o nostalgia da played his trumpet oot the windea in Lawmoor st every nerdea a "guid new year"of! course. Scots law said he was a begger for busking he got fined for busking to the person who liked his wulks off the man wi the barra, his name was Paddy Cryans his maw sold fruit aff the barra in Neaburn st. I married wee betty a great family hard workers and drinkers the person asking about Jimmy Boyle book he has wrote 4 the no mean city is in its "umpteenth edition so it would be easy to buy, cannea find emdea I knew I wonder how cousins Pat Boyle, Tommy Boyle who went to America I sent him a letter came back not known I didnea no Harry Boyle all from sandifauld st. Here's a poem I've just come across that might bring a smile to others. Oh, where is the Glasgow where I used to stay, white wally closes done up wi pipe clay where you knew everybody, first floor to third and to keep your door shut was considered absurd. Where are the weans that once played in the street? wi a jorrie, a peerie, a gird wi a cleet, can they still cadge a hudgie or dreep aff a dike? play hunch cuddy hunch, kick the can, an the like? And where is the wee shop where I used to buy a quarter o'totties, a tuppenny pie a bag o'broke biscuits, a wee sodie scone an'the wummin aye asked "how's yir maw gettin'oan? Where is the Tallie's that I knew so well? that wee corner shoap where they used to sell hot peas, a macallum, ice cream in a poke.. you knew they were Tallies the minute they spoke And where is the cludgie? that cosie wee cell the string fae the cistern, I remember it well where I sat wi a caun'le and studied the rags a win fur the Auld Firm, a loss for the Jags. Where is the tramcar that once did a turn doon Great Western Road, on the old Yoker run the conductress aye knew how tae deal wi the nyaff "if yir gaun, well comoan..if yir no, well gittaff" I think o' the days o'my tenement hame we've got fancy hooses, but they're jist no'the same I'll swap your gizunders, flyovers and jams, for a tuppenny ride on the old Partick trams. Gone is the Glesca that I used to know, Big Wullie, wee Shooie, the steamie, the Co the shilpit, wee bachle, the glaikit big dreep yir ba's on the slates, and yer gas on a peep These days wurnae rosy, and money wis tight the wages haul finished by Setterday night but still we came through it and weathered the ruts the reason is simple, our parents had guts.
