Hi Norrie,
Thanks for your reply, yes Rutherglen was always a nice wee place and I did go there a few times with my girlfriend [centuries ago ha ha], so it's called DR Gorman's now wher do they get these names from Norrie ?. Like you now I tend to stay indoors to have a tipple, it's so expensive in bars now and then all the hassle in getting home, it's about £4 a pint in London now, when I left Glasgow in 1968 as a bricklayer and went to London the wages were £4/ten shillings per day and now that's more or less what they charge for a pint of beer. Ach sure the pension would have to be a £ 1000 a week to get me in the pubs again but what good memories Norrie, speak later pal, take care .

Hi Dannygill, The Viking was renamed Dr Gormans after a well know doctor who practiced in Rutherglen, his statue is in the church on the corner of Main st and Queen st, now doubt you walked past it often :D
I have lived in Rutherglen since 1979 and I had never heard of him, till they renamed the pub
Yes pubs can be expensive, the dearer they get, the less folk will frequent them, mind you, I paid £10 for a pint in Singapore last year in Raffles Hotel, I said I would never moan
about our prices after that but I do :D
Keep well

Bye for now, norrie

Hi Norrie,
Thank's for your message yes Rutherglen was always a nice clean wee town, obviously Dr Gorman must have been a good Doctor to the community to have a pub named after him, walking along Main st the Viking was on the left hand side [set back a street if I remember right] and on a bit was a church ? with an archway you walked through to get to Queen street ?. When I was serving my apprenticeship as a bricklayer my firm built a big supermarket there about 1965 ish which was opposite side of the road from the Viking. Along a bit Norrie on the same side of the road you had the smallest pub [in Scotland ?] I had ever been in we went for a pint at lunch time one Friday and 4 or 5 people at the bar it was full, if my memory serves me correctly . Well I thought prices for a beer were dear in London Norrie but £10 a pint just as well it's thousand's of miles away ha ha. Anyway mate thanks for the info about Dr Gormans, speak later.

Danny :)

I remember a pub with swing doors but was too young [only a boy] and where was the Havana fish/chip shop ?. aye there was many a sight at closing time watching all the punters come out and as you say all the daft talk when the pub emptied. Happy days for sure.

Hi All,

I remember those swinging saloon doors very well, I always expected Roy Rogers to come along any minute and tie Trigger up to the lampost! My Grandfather used the pub often, I used to go round at closing time, which I'm sure was either 9pm or 9.30, and walk him home as a couple of times we found him in the Dunnie! Bless his heart, we all loved our Grandad he was a good man.

Must admit I thought the pub with the swing doors was the " Bible Class " ( what a name for a pub! ) but that must have been another pub I was thinking of somewhere else. I remember the fish'n chip shop but also the " Havana Bar ". I can remember most of the pubs around that area, do you remember the " Teachers " pub in Crown Street? It always reminded me of an undertakers as the outside was painted slate Grey and a metal disk hanging above the door with a cut-out " T " on it for Teachers.

I think I got to know so many pubs because we used take back empty beer bottles to them and get some money back. Each pub had their own stamp on the bottle label so they knew it was theirs. But to let you into a secret, what they didn't know was we kids used to scale the " Sausage dyke wall " get over the back of the pub and nick the empty bottles that were stored at the back for collection and of course take them back the next day for refund........Don't tell anybody or the might send the bizzies round to pay me a visit.

I remember going to the Clelland Bar around that time. The group i remember were called Trampas, and if my memory serves me well they had a Female in the band. They always seemed to finish off at the end of the night with a rendition of Sandman by America.
