Rag and bone man.

Hi Gang,
Hope everyone is doing OK, was thining the other day when the rag and bone man came round the streets of the soo-side, was it a bugle or a trumpet he blew ?. As soon as you heard the bugle[trumpet] a big cheer went up as we ran up the stairs to beg our Ma's for a few old clothes so we could get a balloon in return lol. That had us smiling for a while , I wonder how many rags/clothes the rag and bone man had to collect to get himself a few shillings ?, where did he go to off-load them ?. I'm sure there was a big clothes place for rags in Ballater st under the railway arches [just round the corner from Hospital st where the Cleland bar was] but there must have been other shops for old clothes , does/can anyone remember where they were. Hi Danny,

I remember the Rag and Bone man very well, he used to blow a bugle not a trumpet. My Mum always checked that you weren't grabbing any good clothes before she would let you out the door! Yeah I remember that place in Ballater St it used to have mountains of clothes all heaped up in there, you could smell the clothes as you walked past. We used to live in Hospital St, my Sister Janice was born there, God Bless her.

Hi John & Danny I too remember the rag and bone man I don't think anyone got much more than a balloon
There was a rag store round the corner from where I stayed when I was young it was under the bridge in Cumberland St at Surrey St.
Surreyboy would remember it on the left hand side going towards Eglington St., there was another one in Commercial Rd round from Spring lane where the bandy hope was I can see it as plain as anything, they had a few steps up to it. It was next to Cecils pub in Rutherglen Rd/Commercial Rd.
What the pub that was built I its place was it the Lantern
Do you all remember the kippering factory in Errol St.
Hi Danny where have you been hiding hop y are not on that facebook I didn't know anyone but I never went through it all.
Margaret got all my knitting done started again got the bug back again as I had went away from it but I bought a cracking pattern book it cost me £8 and I sent away for a couple of patterns of ebay.
had these patterns when the kids were young but they were all ripped to bits so I went onto ebay they come under vintage patterns now the patterns cost 6d an 9d in old money but I paid £3 for the 9d one and a £1 for the 6d one and postage it cost about a £5 all in

Hello Everyone...Talking about the rag and bone man...when he came around we would run up the stairs to my mammy and ask for rags and she would tell us "Well, which of the rags would you like to take?"
There was a rag place in a wee lane off Cumberland Street almost across from Toby's the fish and chip shop near the Paragon...Ian Fisher the fishmongers was at the bottom of the lane and you could bring your old clothes there and they weighed them and gave you the money for them...It was a terrible wee smelly place.

You know if we do not use it, we will lose it...So get cracking and come up with some new subjects for us to discuss...I am sure there are plenty of them...I am going to put on my thinking hat and see what I can come up with.
