Clutha pub

Hi Rose,
I think the pub in St Enoch's square might have been the "Maxwell Arms" it was right on the corner of Maxwell st [if I remember right] there was a downstairs restaurant in the square called the Square peg which I believe had a bar upstairs but going along a bit there was a pub called "the old Eagle inn" or was it the Swiss something or other ?.

The Kind Man I frequented was back in 1969 and the early 70's, so over 40 years ago, long before any review could be looked up on the internet. Happy to say that I nor the hundreds of other customers had no such negative experiences instead we enjoyed the great bands and great people, oh and that included the great staff. Quite frankly your post is offensive and feels like a personal attack and as it's not the first time you have offended or insulted someone on here it's now becoming annoying. I agree with everything you said. Like you I used to use the pub back in the same time frame, so I guess we must have bumped in to each other at some stage you know! I was just married in 1969 and my wife and I lived in Carfin St for a couple of years, so we used to go to the pub every weekend, the music and the people were great, we always had a good time there. In fact the band that played there used to play all the latest hit songs and we used to persuade them to play " Take the ribbon from my hair " and you wont believe it, every time we walked in the door they would play that song for us without having to request it.....
Magic!!!!

First of all I didn't research it. All I did was check the name as I thought I recognised the name. It said it was once called the kind man then Strathies then back to the kind man and my friend Rose Doyle also mentioned she couldn't place it either. That review was on the same page. I was only pointing out that as time goes by peoples attitudes do also. As many years ago places were more customer friendly compared to these days. Also I was not being offensive and never would be offensive to my elders, I have too much respect for people. I apologise if anyone on here felt ANY of my comments have been offensive. I enjoy reading the stories on here.

This topic is titled The Clutha pub and was meant as a show of respect for the victims and their families. While several of us have gone off topic and talked about different pubs, nothing said has been disrespectful to the Clutha's victims or their families in these other posts. The review of the Kind Man you posted on here is in bad taste and is totally disrespectful of how this topic was intended. Therefore, do the right thing and remove that part of your post, or start your own topic and move it to there.

You know none of those names rings a bell with me, I'll have to ask my auntie as she got me the job. I always remember taking this guys order and he wanted a Drambuie...well other than a Carlsberg special I had no idea what a Drambuie was...but they guy was so nice about it when I explained I was just learning the ropes. There was a shop in St Enochs' Square where the young guys would go to get their shirts made by this tailor, (Colin mentions it in one of his books)...well the pub I speak about was a couple of doors up from there, but don't think it was right on the corner....but I'll find out as it can be really annoying trying to remember a place from years ago.
Hope that ingrown toenail is a bit better Danny.

Hi Sheila, Rose and All,

What a funny story that is, but typical Glaswegian humour. I know most people think we say things in an aggressive way, but it's misunderstood as it's just the way we tell 'em! I love Glasgow humour, it's not subtle it gets you straight between the eyes, but so funny! Like a great white wine, Dry, Crisp and plenty of Kick, but not unexpected!

Just like you Rose, I used the Scotia Bar most times as this was my Granda's pub and I always made a point of calling in to see him for a pint before heading for the Square Peg on St Enoch's Square to meet my pals. Later in the evening, if we were still sober, we would head off for the Clutha and see what music was on and stay for a while until we headed off for the Lindela Club to check out the talent....Happy Days !!!!!

I had to laugh at myself when I re read my post...Billys' band was the Humblebums...not Grumblebum as that's my name for hubby
I was surprised to hear you went to the Lindela Club...I went there as well, but from memory it was a during the weekday when it was open. The dancers that were there the 'Lindela Movers' were used on Top of The Pops. I also worked at the Locarno taking tickets at the door (were you would get a heads up on where the parties were at after the dancing) and as a disc jockey upstairs in the disco...but I used to relieve the band that played in the ballroom, once the stage revolved for the band to take a break...I would play 4 or 5 songs until it was time for the band to take over. I have so many wonderful memories of my time working there, and when I wasn't working I would be there every Sat night anyway. I also worked in a pub in St Enoch's Square but I canny remember the name of it...it was on the right hand side as you entered the square. I think I have been in Oz for too long as it's getting harder for me to remember places back home.

Anyway take care John and don't forget to let us know your decision re the house in Castlemilk..we are waiting with baited breath

Great name for Hubby, I hope he appreciates it! Yeah, I loved the Lindela, I always had a great time there. You never know maybe we had a dance together! Will keep you in touch with my Castlemilk project.

I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with Granny911...lots of times when people make a post your reply to them has to be sarcastic in some way, and you always seem to give negative comments in return. When John spoke of revisiting a house he holds so dear you had to tell him about it being the worst street etc...as opposed to not wishing him well in his quest to re visit the house. Then Granny911 posted about Kenny Miller and you had to ask was it a Kenny Miller fan club. Now again, we are at the Kind Man and research from you suggests it's one of the worst pubs...again all negative comments when the posts said about great times there in the 1960's. Then you posted to Granny911 you have more respect for your elders...how on earth do you know Granny 911 is an elder...you don't so all we can take from that is an insult. But what surprises me most is...there has been no post from you on this thread titled "The Clutha" giving your condolences to victims and their families....wonder why that is. Perhaps if you were a bit nicer and stop correcting people all the time when they post something, or researching so you can come back and leave negative comments...then we can all get on with what this site is all about...anecdotes.
Of course this is only my opinion, and as we are entitled to free speech in a democratic society I felt the need to give my opinion.
